The Kids Give It Another Try, Accompanied by a Chorus of Fake-Ass First Amendment Claims

Oh hey, remember the two ninth-graders who wanted to form a chapter of Turning Point USA at their high school? The ones who had to hastily cancel a January event at the Canadian Club in Barre?

Well, they’re back. Yep, gonna give it another try on February 20. Maybe someday they’ll learn to schedule events far enough in advance to rustle up a crowd.

Interesting that Turning Point USA appears nowhere on the meeting’s publicity materials. It’s now billed as “Club America,” which, you’ll be shocked to learn, is a TPUSA joint aimed at the high school crowd. Perhaps they realized that the name “Turning Point USA” is itself a red flag a-waving.

The boys have reined in their expectations regarding speakers. They’ve dropped the “Invited” list that (laughably) included Gov. Phil Scott and professional anti-trans activist Riley Gaines. Two of the confirmed speakers from January are back on the agenda: State Rep. Michael Boutin of Barre, a first-term lawmaker with some decidedly outré views, and Vermont Republican Party chair Paul Dame.

Which once again begs the question, why is the head of Phil Scott’s party choosing to associate with a couple of dipshit kids who want to bring ultraconservative extremism to Vermont? Somebody should ask him, and should ask the governor what he thinks of Dame’s complicity.

Roger Garrity Doesn’t Get It

Note: After several days of holding fast, WCAX quietly removed the story from its website. News Director Roger Garrity told Seven Days, “We are now working with LGBTQ advocates on a message to the community acknowledging the harm that was caused.” About damn time.

The First Amendment is a powerful tool. It can inspire needed reforms, or uncover wrongdoing at the highest level. It can also wreak havoc on unfortunate bystanders.

Enter Roger Garrity, news director at WCAX-TV, an outlet that seems to be trending in the Fox News direction. On September 28, the station ran an irresponsibly one-sided story about a “locker room dispute” at Randolph High School. It extensively quoted a single member of the volleyball team who’s upset about sharing a locker room with a transgender student. She expressed the usual claptrap about “biological males” and at one point said, curiously, “My mom wants me to do this interview.”

See, in real journalism that’s the beginning of the reporting. But WCAX had some hot video and they ran with it, not giving a good goddamn about the consequences. Which are, as VTDigger’s headline put it, a “wildfire of bigotry.”

“It’s been an absolute nightmare. Horrifying. My family is in constant pain from the lies and harassment,” said the mother of the 14-year-old trans student. The story went viral in the conservative media space, triggering the usual firestorm of outrage.

Garrity, having allowed his news team to toss a metaphorical Molotov cocktail into a crowded room, floated the Tucker Carlson excuse: We were reporting the controversy, not the incident itself.

Lightning Round!

Well, the shower drain of political news is once again backed up, so it’s time to apply some rhetorical Liquid-Plumr and get the system going again. In today’s installment: the VDP at a crossroads, a really stupid lawsuit from a once-reputable publishing house, a complaint about Peter Welch being too good at fundraising, and maybe the worst political cartoon I’ve ever seen. Let the plunging begin!

The Vermont Democratic Party needs to take a look in the mirror. The VDP is once again looking for an executive director. Claire Cummings lasted about one year on the job before offering her resignation under circumstances unknown. As I wrote upon her hiring, “Cummings is the fourth person to hold the job in less than four years — and the fifth, if you count then-party chair Terje Anderson’s unfortunate tenure as interim ED in 2019.” Well, now they’re looking for their fifth in five years, or sixth if you count Anderson.

It’s sad. It’s pathetic. It’s a mess. And now the VDP must hire a new ED in the middle of election season. It needs someone who can hit the ground running with deep knowledge of Vermont and of campaigning. And it desperately needs someone with the guts to confront party elders if need be. I can think of at least one person who fits that descriptor to a tee. No names, because I don’t know where the search is going to go. But i can tell you one thing: If they hire someone from outside the state and/or someone under the age of 25, it’ll mean they’re happy with the status quo. Or, to put it another way, it’ll mean they’re seriously out of touch and full of unwarranted conceit.
